Lockdown is being reintroduced in England in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus. The new rules were announced as the total number of cases in the UK surpassed one million. The new rules and restrictions will come into force on Thursday, October 5. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide to explain who can and cannot work during lockdown.
England will be placed under stricter nationwide restrictions from Thursday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled the measures on Saturday.
The new rules will come into effect from 12.01am on Thursday until December 2.
All of England will be subject to the same restrictions mandating people stay at home except for a list of specific reasons.

From Thursday you are only permitted to leave your home for the following reasons:
- For education
- For work if you cannot work from home
- To exercise outdoors or visit an outdoor public place
- For medical reasons
- To escape injury or harm
- To shop for food and other essentials
- To provide care for vulnerable people
- To visit people in your support people or as a volunteer.
Who can work during lockdown?
Anyone able to work from home is advised to do so by the Government.
However, certain employees who cannot work from home are permitted to continue attending workplaces outside their home.
This includes:
- Keyworkers
- Construction
- Manufacturing.

Offices can stay open for those unable to work from home, but anyone working in an office is advised to remain inside as much as possible.
The Government guidance reads: “To help contain the virus, everyone who can work effectively from home must do so.
“Where people cannot do so (for instance people who work in critical national infrastructure, construction or manufacturing) they should continue to travel to work/attend their workplace.
“This is essential to keeping the country operating and supporting vital sectors and employers.
“Public sector employees working in essential services, including education settings, should continue to go into work.
“The risk of transmission can be substantially reduced if COVID-secure guidelines are followed closely.
“Extra consideration should be given to those people at higher risk.”
Who is a key worker?
Key workers are people whose job is vital to public health and safety during the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition, it includes people who are employed in jobs which are important to how society functions.
These jobs include workers in the following sectors:
- Health and social care
- Education and childcare
- Food and necessary goods
- Key public services
- Local and national Government
- Utility workers
- Public safety and national security
- Transport.

What other lockdown rules apply to workers?
International travel out of the UK is now banned for all reasons except work.
You must also avoid all travel by private and public transport unless for one of the key reasons above.
Overnight stays and holidays away from your home are banned for all people.
However, staying away from your home for work purposes is permitted.
Hotels, hostels and other accommodation can remain open for people travelling for work and must be limited for other reasons.
