King Charles and  Queen Camilla both have a bizarre hobby they enjoy, the Queen’s son has revealed.

Tom Parker-Bowles, who shares a close relationship with his mum, 77, and the King, 75, has recently given royal fans an insight into his mum’s life in his new book, Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III.

In the book, food writer Tom shared how both Queen Camilla and the King enjoy foraging for mushrooms, and can become “deeply competitive about their hauls”.

He also said that wild mushrooms are “somewhat of an obsession” for both the monarch and his mother, with Charles famously taking part in his hobby on the same day his mother Queen Elizabeth passed away in 2022.

According to sources, Charles was at the bedside of the late Queen in Balmoral Castle on the day she died, however he also went to nearby Birkhall to gather mushrooms alone.

When he was returning from this is when he received a call telling him his mother had passed away.

While royal fans may only be finding out about the King’s hobby now, his interest in mushrooms goes back decades according to The Daily Mail, who said how he even went on a mushroom foraging trip alone in August 2011.

According to the Daily Mail, the King walked for miles at Loch Muick, near his Birkhall home, while the rest of his family went grouse shooting. The then Prince of Wales was said to have foraged Chanterelles and was so focused on the activity that he didn’t even see a nearby group of walkers.

His wife Camilla is also known to have spent time outdoors foraging for mushrooms alone, including in 2007 when Charles was preparing for a service in memory of Princess Diana.

The Daily Mail said Camilla took a trip to Balmoral at this time and was seen picking mushrooms with a royal protection officer by her side.

As well as revealing the couple’s mushroom foraging habits in his book, Camilla’s son also spoke about how the couple have “laid back” dinners when it is just the two of them.

He previously said: "With the exception of state banquets and official dinners, the King and Queen eat simple, healthy and resolutely seasonal food, whether they're at Buckingham Palace, Sandringham or Balmoral.”
