Duchess of Cambridge congratulates Emma Raducanu as Sports Personality win seals epic year
ROYAL tennis fans the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge served up congratulations for Emma Raducanu yesterday after she was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
William and Wimbledon patron Kate posted: "Congratulations @EmmaRaducanu on a truly incredible year." The 19-year-old, whose US Open win ended Britain's 44-year wait for a women's Grand Slam champ, wrote to fans: "Thank you very much and thank you for your support all year! It's an honour to represent Britain."
Raducanu also tweeted a picture of her award, adding: "Me and my SPOTY. I'm honoured just to be amongst the other great nominees, let alone win."
Emma, the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam, is also the first woman to scoop the 66-year-old BBC ballot since Zara Tindall in 2006.
Former coach Harry Bushnell said: "She's a deserved winner."
Emma could not attend Sunday's ceremony as she is isolating with Covid in Abu Dhabi ahead of the Australian Open.
Diver Tom Daley came second up and swimmer Adam Peaty third.
