Prince William reflects on ‘opening door to media’ in 2017
An unearthed interview with Prince William has revealed the Duke of Cambridge once issued a prophetic warning over members of the Royal Family "opening the door to the media." The remarks film by the BBC in 2017 have been re-aired in a new New ITV royal documentary 'Harry and William: What Went Wrong?' which explores the roots of the public rift between William and his brother Prince Harry.
Prince William warned: "I can understand having some time been in those situations.
"When you can feel incredibly desperate and it is very unfair, and things are being said that aren't true.
"The easiest thing to do is just to say...or to go to the media yourself or you know...open that door.
"But once you have opened it you can never close it again."
Documentary narrator Frances Barber explains the origins of the Duke of Cambridge's hesitancy over engaging with the media.
She stated that William's childhood memories of the intense media focus surrounding his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, helped shape his views.
"It was the strategy that has its origins in William's memories as a teenager of watching his parents bare their souls on television," said Ms Barber.
"His mother's interview with the now-discredited Martin Bashir was particularly traumatising."
