Season four of The Crown documents the romance between Prince Charles and Diana, including their first meeting when she was still at school, the engagement interview when he uttered the famous line "whatever in love means", and their blockbuster wedding. Mr Burrell has warned the Royal Family that the "truth will come out". Speaking to ITV's Good Morning Britain, Mr Burrell said: "It's true the Queen was very supportive of Diana as was Prince Philip.

"They did not condone Charles's relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles, they didn't like it.

"Philip wrote to Diana and said to her, 'Mama and I do not condone this relationship. We cannot understand for the life of us why Charles would choose Camilla over you'.

"Philip's words, truth.

"The truth has to come out and the truth will come out.

"You will see it all in graphic detail in The Crown.

"I'm loving it because I'm seeing history being played out again."

Asked how truthful the series is, Mr Burrell said: "Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction...there is an element of truth that runs through The Crown.

"Like it or not, it’s not easy watching.

"Sometimes it is upsetting, for me particularly, but there is truth in there.

"Of course Prince Charles’s people want to squash it, of course the Palace wants to squash it.

"But what do we do then? Do we sanitise our Royal Family and only give you a censored version of what happened?"

Defending The Crown allegedly inventing some parts of the story, he said: "This is a dramatisation, it is not a documentary of the Royal family, it is a screenplay.

"What Peter Morgan has tried to do, and sensitively try to do, is align fact with his screenplay."

Criticism of The Crown has often focused on its portrayal of made-up events.

The show employs researchers but Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown defended his right to creative freedom.

The latest Crown season begins with Baroness Thatcher's rise to power in 1979 and the assassination by the IRA of Lord Mountbatten (Charles Dance) during a fishing trip in Ireland.

Josh O'Connor returns as the Prince of Wales, with Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker-Bowles, Olivia Colman as the Queen, Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Edinburgh and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

Netflix declined to comment on the claims when approached by Express.co.uk.

Representatives for Prince Charles did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
