King Charles was seemingly caught in an awkward moment this evening as Rod Stewart praised him for dealing with "rat bag" US President Donald Trump during his recent trip to the US. The King and Queen Camilla stepped out tonight to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the King’s Trust at the Royal Albert Hall.

Upon meeting the King, the singer mentioned the King's recent trip to the United States, during which Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, marked the 250th anniversary of American independence. Speaking to the monarch, Rod said: "May I say, well done in the Americas. You were superb, absolutely superb, put that little ratbag in his place".

The 78-year-old's reply was indistinct apart from a subsequent mention later in the conversation of "yes exactly", as Rod replied:"‘It went right over his head."

During the visit, the King addressed the diplomatically sensitive topic of the UK and US's strained special relationship and stressed the importance of NATO and the defence of Ukraine in his historic address.

The King’s speech to Congress was met with rapturous applause and a standing ovation as he spoke of the heart of the relationship between the UK and the US as “a story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership”.

The King also drew laughter with a pointed remark aimed at Donald Trump’s earlier claim that, without American intervention in World War 2, Europeans would now be speaking “German and a little bit of Japanese”.

Turning the argument on its head, Charles told assembled guests: “You recently stated, Mr President, that without the United States, European countries would speak German. Dare I say that without us, you would speak French?”

In a message posted to social media after departing the US, the King and Queen said: "Farewell and thank you for the warmth of your welcome and the kind support you gave us throughout our first visit to the US as King and Queen, in this, your special anniversary year.

"We leave a piece of our heart behind and take a little of yours back home with us. Until the next time… God Bless America."

Rod Stewart has made it clear that he is not a fan of Trump, having previously spoken about his dislike following President Trump's disparaging comments about members of the armed forces. He appeared to slam the US President as a “draft dodger” and demanded an apology for the remarks.

In a video that was shared online, Rod said: "Hey there, I may just be a humble rock star. I’m also a knight of the realm, and I have my opinions. I was born just after the war and have great respect for our armed forces that fought and gave us our freedom,” he continued. “So it hurts me badly, deeply, when I read that the draft dodger Trump has criticised our troops in Afghanistan for not being on the front line.”

“We lost over 400 of our guys, think of their parents. Think about it. And Trump calls them almost like cowards. It’s unbearable, so I’m calling on you Prime Minister Starmer and Farage, please make the draft dodger Trump apologise. Please.”
