The couple married in 1981, despite rumours surrounding their tumultuous relationship and the scrutiny of the British press. However, the couple’s wedding was watched by millions across the world and has become remembered for one very special reason.
Diana and Charles’ wedding day kiss on the balcony at Buckingham Palace has been voted Britain’s most memorable kiss.
A UK study found that the moment of affection on the balcony is at the forefront of the nation’s minds.
Following their romantic kiss is Prince William and Kate’s embrace in 2011.
In third place is Prince Harry and Meghan Marke’s kiss last year outside St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
The research was commissioned by the HISTORY channel ahead of their series called ‘Photos That Changed the World’.
The channel asked respondents to rate the most memorable kisses in history.
A quarter of respondents said that Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ kiss was their most memorable moment.
Speaking about the survey results, a spokesman for HISTORY channel said: “The photo of Charles and Diana is iconic but it wasn’t even planned, as they had forgotten to kiss at the end of the ceremony.

“Of course, the kiss is imbued with poignancy when we look back on it now, as we know the tragic fate that awaited the People’s Princess.”
The couple wed in St Paul’s Cathedral in front of 3,500 people which included Diana’s former employer Mary Robertson.
Margaret Thatcher and Camilla Parker-Bowles also attended the wedding.
Around 600,000 people lined the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the famous couple on their wedding day.

A further 750million watched the wedding on television.
The fairytale wedding remains to this day one of the most watched events in history.
Unfortunately, the couple’s marriage began to fall apart slowly after the wedding.
They divorced in August 1996, with Diana later dying in a car accident in Paris a year later.
The late Princess opened up with BBC Panorama’s Martin Bashir about her life in the Royal Family and marriage to Prince Charles.
In the interview, Diana not only spoke about her husband’s infidelity but also shed some light on how they both dealt with their engagements.
When asked about the media attention, the Princess said: “It made it very difficult, because for a situation where it was a couple working in the same job – we got out the same car, we shook the same hand, my husband did the speeches, I did the handshaking.
“So basically we were a married couple doing the same job, which is very difficult for anyone, and more so if you’ve got all the attention on you.
“We struggled a bit with it, it was very difficult.”
The new series on the HISTORY channel will air this week.
