Prince Harry and Prince William are now taking on more and more royal responsibilities as they dedicate themselves to their senior roles in the royal family, alongside Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. With rumours of tension between the two households, however, it seems that royal duty and commitment can sometimes make family relationships difficult to navigate. Katie Nicholl, in her 2010 book “William and Harry”, reveals that Harry "felt left out" from a young age due to the extra attention the royal family would give to William.
She writes: “Harry had to get used to William being the ‘special one’ and, from a young age, was aware of the pecking order."
Ms Nicholl explains how the late Queen Mother would send for William, but not his brother, to see her at her residence.
She says: “When they were little William would often be invited to Clarence House to see his great-grandmother without Harry.
“‘I’m off to see Gran Gran,’ he would announce, leaving Harry to play alone in the nursery."
Ms Nicholl continues: “Diana was aware that Harry felt left out and doted on him."
Diana’s friend Simone Simmons told Ms Nicholl: “He loved having [Diana] to himself and not having to compete with William.”
Ms Nicholl, who writes for Vanity Fair, also reveals how, when he was older, Prince William would have weekly private meetings with the Queen.
The prince studied at Eton College, just a stones throw from Windsor Castle, and would joke that he was “off to the WC” when he went for tea with his grandmother.
She writes: “[The Queen] considered it vital preparation for his future role as king.”
