Rishi Sunak has mocked Sir Keir Starmer after the Labour leader pledged to clock off at 6pm every day should he win the General Election.

Speaking to Virgin Radio this morning, the Labour leader said he would refuse to work 24/7.

He added that he wants to continue having "protected time for the kids" every Friday and will "not do a work related thing after 6pm pretty well come what may”

He added: "I don’t believe in the theory that you’re a better decision-maker if you don’t allow yourself the space to be a dad and have fun for your kids.

"Actually, it helps me. It takes me away from the pressure, it relaxes me and I think actually, not only is that what I want to do as a dad, it is better."

"Politics, some people think if you fill your diary 24/7 and don’t do anything else, that makes you a much better decision maker. I don’t agree with that. I think you’ve got to make space."

However the comments have received a scornful reaction from many, with Conservatives mocking the Labour leader for wanting “beauty sleep” despite knowing the demands of the job.

Speaking to Sky News this afternoon, Rishi Sunak mocked his opponent and added he has "never" finished working at 6pm.

He joked: "I haven’t seen the comments but what I would say is - what time is it now? - I haven’t finished at six, ever.

"We would only have a couple of hours left in the day at this point, which is not great."

Popular Tory mayor of the Tees Valley Ben Houchen blasted: "Angela Rayner in charge of the country because Slippery Starmer needs his beauty sleep…

"God forbid the Government need to do anything after 6pm."

While the official Conservative Party Twitter account added: "Keir Starmer has said he'd clock off work at 6pm if he became Prime Minister.

"You deserve better than a part-time Prime Minister."

However Sir Keir did receive support from those who backed his decision, with Labour-supporting social media users arguing they respect his commitment to his family, and pointing out that David Cameron was the first Prime Minister to take time off work for paternity leave.
