Nigel Farage has revealed that he would consider leading a reformed Conservative party after the General Election. It comes as his party has overtaken the Tories for the first time, according to a recent shock poll.

A YouGov survey found that Farage's Reform party has increased support by two points to 19 percent. The Tories are currently on 18 percent, with the Labour party currently storming ahead.

The poll results were released just minutes before the former Ukip leader was due to take part in a seven-way debate on ITV last night.

As the show began, Farage told viewers: "Just before we came on air we overtook the Conservatives in the national opinion polls. We are now the opposition to Labour."

Overall Labour retained a 19-point lead over the Conservatives, while the Liberal Democrats were down one point at 14 percent in the poll for the Times.

Nigel Farage's Reform party has faced criticism after one of his candidates said the UK have "taken Hitler up on his offer of neutrality" instead of fighting Nazis.

Farage also previously described Hitler as “hypnotic in a very dangerous way” after reiterating his admiration for Vladimir Putin as a “political operator”.

The Brexiteer this week told LBC's Nick Ferrari that he would lead a reformed Conservative party.

He said: "I don't know what it's called, but do I think I could end up leading a national opposition to a Labour party with a big majority, where I can stand up and hold them to account on issues? Yes."

When asked by the host if he would "be happy to lead a merged party," Farage responded: "Yes". Nick pushed: "Would you be happy to lead the Conservative Party?"

Farage responded: "Well, not as it currently is," as he theorised that the Conservative party "may well be dead".

"I would be prepared to lead the centre right in this country; a centre right that stands up for small business, a centre right that believes in borders, a centre right that isn't scared about standing up for the British people," Farage concluded.
