As the autumn season approaches, we will soon be putting in every effort to keep our homes cosy and warm.

However, with energy bills across England, Scotland and Wales set to rise by another 10% later this year under the new price cap, this might prove more of a challenge than hoped. The increase in unit prices for both gas and electricity coming in October has seen searches for 'how to lower heating costs' double on Google over the past month.

In light of the ongoing cost of living crisis, expert Monika Puccio has shared a quick change you can make to your home to help save on energy bills – and it won't cost you a penny. Monika, a sofa-buying specialist at Sofa Club, has offered a simple tip for Brits to counteract the energy price hike and start saving money by moving your furniture around.

She explained: "Moving your sofa away from the radiator could save you a significant amount. "Positioning your sofa away from the radiator is a simple yet effective way to optimise the energy distributed around the living room."

She continued: "When your sofa is positioned too close to a radiator, it blocks the heat from circulating effectively – this is especially true for darker-coloured sofas, as they tend to absorb and retain heat. Not only does this method prevent any potential health and safety risks associated with your sofa overheating, but it also reduces wear and tear, prolonging its lifespan. This also means you shouldn't have to spend money replacing your sofa as often."

Monika added interior design can prove the key to success, and therefore repositioning your sofa can transform your living area into an "open and inviting" space.

She continued: "By giving your furniture the space to breathe, you create a more dynamic flow, which allows the room to feel less cramped and more balanced.

"In light of rising energy costs expected this year, these simple adjustments are certainly something to bear in mind as we approach the colder, more demanding winter period."

Echoing Monika's interior tips, TikTok influencer Noah Da Boa also endorses the use of reflective panels. "Add them behind your radiator to ensure they're not just heating up the walls, but heating the whole room."

He continued: "Finally, open your curtains during the sunny hours of the day and close them when it gets dark. This heats up the house and then insulates it when it gets cold."
