Doing a white wash can be annoying as there will always be one laundry item that is still stained no matter how many times it spins in the washing machine.

White socks and clothing tend to stain more due to lighter fabric absorbing sweat, body oil and other dirt more visibly, which can cause a yellow tint over time.

However, Mary Hunt, a money-saver expert and founder of the Everyday Cheapskate has shared she has the “absolutely best” homemade solution to get rid of laundry stains for good.

She said: “I’m excited to tell you how to make a fabulous, if not magical, do-it-yourself homemade laundry stain remover.

“Compare this to…any other pricey commercial product. This stain remover recipe is so easy and cheap to make. And wow, does it perform!”

How to make a powerful laundry stain remover with natural ingredients

You will need:

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Blue Dawn washing up liquid
  • Empty spray bottle

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural way to break down tough organic stains such as blood, wine or coffee into smaller containers which will help lift the stain from white fabric.

It also has a mild bleaching effect that will help lighter stains be removed gently without having to use harsh chlorine bleach.

Washing up liquid contains surfactants which help lift stains when washed in water and has been designed to cut through grease so is very good at removing oily stains naturally.

Mary suggests using Blue Dawn washing-up liquid as contains specific surfactants that are very effective on stains but any washing-up liquid can be used.

Method

All you need to do is add one part washing-up liquid and two parts fresh hydrogen peroxide to an empty spray bottle. A funnel may make it easier to add the ingredients if you have one.

Give the bottle a shake to mix it and then apply it directly to the stained white clothing.

Mary said: “Don’t be surprised when that stain disappears all by itself! If it doesn’t, rub the stain with a brush or clean white cloth (you don’t want to transfer color from a cleaning cloth to the stained item).”

Once the stain looks like it is getting smaller or is gone completely then simply place in the washing machine on a regular wash.

After the laundry is done hang it outside or place it on a gentle tumble dryer setting to dry and your clothes should look sparkling white.

Mary added that will stain remover is a “miracle worker” that will work on coloured clothing as well, but make sure to test patch it beforehand.

She said: “It tackles red wine stains, organic stains such as blood and grass, pet stains and baby stains. You can use this on coloured items as well as whites (although test it first in an inconspicuous place).”
