It is now that time of year when flies are buzzing around homes and being an annoyance, but there is an incredibly simple way to keep these pesky bugs away.

Flies are more likely to enter homes in the summer as more people have their windows open and while also having food out in the open which flies will be attracted to.

More people are spending time outdoors having summer parties, barbecues and picnics which means flies are more likely to venture to areas with people to search for additional food.

However, rather than buying a harsh chemical spray why not try a much easier and more natural way to get rid of flies before spraying toxic fumes?

Lynsey Crombie, Britain’s most popular cleaning expert also known as the Queen of Clean, has shared a very easy pest control method to stop flies being a nuisance, and it will only cost you a couple of pennies.

In an Instagram post, Lynsey said: “Enjoy meals outdoors without being bothered by flies by adding copper coins to a jar of water!

“The copper in the coins acts as a natural repellent, keeping those pesky flies away. Perfect for summer picnics and BBQs!”

It may sound strange, but the ‘penny in a jar’ method is a natural home remedy believed to deter flies by scaring them away.

The idea behind it is that the penny will reflect and create a prism effect which flies can mistake for the eyes predators while the reflecting lights, colours and movements will also confuse them.

How to make a natural remedy to keep flies away

You will need:

  • Clear plastic sandwich bags or glass
  • Several shiny pennies
  • String, twine or a way to hang the bag
  • Water

Method:

To begin, fill the bag about three-quarters of the way full and place around three to five pennies in the bag.

Seal the bag tightly to stop water leaking out, then tie a piece of string or twine around it.

Hang the bag near entry points such as doors, windows and patios or place the bag near food if you are having a barbecue or picnic.

You can also place pennies in a glass or water if you are eating outdoors to have the same effect.

This simple and natural method should keep flies away and stop them from being a nuisance this summer.

In Lysney’s comment section, people were amazed by this trick and many commentators said they had no idea it was that easy to deter flies.

One user said: “Well, well, well I never knew that! Thanks, Lynsey!” Another person wrote: “How clever!”

Someone else commented: “Definitely going to try this, thanks Lynsey for your brilliant tips.”
