Laundry can be a chore, but it doesn't have to cost a lot of money if you’re doing it right.

Washing machines are essential appliances, but the Energy Saving Trust has listed them, alongside the dishwasher and tumble dryer, as the top “energy guzzling appliance” in your home, meaning your bill can quickly rack up if you're not careful.

According to them, these appliances account for a whopping 14% of your household energy bill.

Not only can cutting back on detergent help reduce costs but so can washing clothes at certain times of the day help.

It turns out there's a particular “magic hour” when doing laundry which is the cheapest time to use the washing machine. However, many households are missing out because they don't know when it is.

According to the experts at Dr. Beckmann, many wash their clothes at the most expensive time of day. They say a whopping 85 percent of the UK are doing their laundry when energy bills are at their highest - between 8am and 10pm.

Meanwhile, one in 10 Britons are washing between 4pm and 7pm, which is peak time for expensive energy.

So when are the magic hours when it comes to saving energy? According to the experts, those who want to cut costs should wash clothes between 10pm and 8am.

However, the experts don't recommend putting the appliance on while you're in bed, for safety reasons, so say the “magic hour” which is most practical is between 7am and 8am.

The experts found that only 15% of people currently take advantage of the "magic hour" when energy costs are at their lowest.

Energy suppliers often increase their prices during peak times, when most people consume energy.

Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Chloe Baker said: “This ‘magic hour’ provides you with enough time to fill and empty your washing machine before heading out to work or for the school run.

“By washing at the ‘magic hour’, you can help keep costs low while ensuring your clothes stay fresh and clean all year round.”

Whether electricity will be cheaper for you in the morning depends on the type of tariff you’re on.

Certain tariffs and more modern smart off-peak plans, are designed to save you money when electricity costs less because fewer people are using it.
