Eco-friendly cleaning influencer and mum of two Kate said she "could never believe that you could clean your oven without the harsh chemicals" until she discovered a planet-friendly hack that has changed the way she tackles the inside of her appliance for good.

TikTok creator Kate, who posts under the username @my_plastic_free_home has amassed 22.5k followers to date and also shares her "green cleaning" tips on Instagram @my_plastic_free_home.

She discovered that the easy method left her oven "sparkling clean" without having to reach for the usual chemical-based oven cleaners. To top it off, it's a budget-friendly cleaning method too.

In the video posted to TikTok and Instagram, she explained how you can clean away stubborn dirt and grime using just the power of steam, along with some baking soda and some dish soap. It's best to use an all-natural dish soap to reduce chemicals.

She said: "You need to fill a bowl with boiling water and put it in the oven for 30 minutes.

"Then mix one tablespoon of liquid soap and one tablespoon of baking soda and spread it onto your oven door.

"You'll see that the dirt falls off straight away and that's because it has been steaming.

"When cool, take some scrunched-up foil and rub it all over the door."

In the video, Kate scrubs the oven door with tin foil to reveal how much grime has already fallen away. "Now just wipe it down and it will be sparkling clean. Next, you want to take the shelves and soak them overnight, or for as long as you can, in hot soapy water," she continued

"Then get that scrunched-up foil again and the dirt easily glides off. This is my favourite part of cleaning the shelves because it is so satisfying. Look at that before and after. There you have it, a perfectly clean oven."

Speaking about the hack, Howard Moss, CEO of Astonish said Kate's method proves an "eco-conscious" way to tackle your oven, and it's one he believes "makes a real difference, and her steaming technique is no exception."

The expert added: "Rather than using any harsh chemicals for a tough-to-clean oven, a bowl of water is used to steam the entirety of it, making the burnt-on stains easier to wipe off.

“Just like soaking a burnt pan, heat and steam can help loosen stubborn dirt. Ovens can be particularly tricky to clean but starting off with hot water can make life easier.”
