Whiten dirty stained socks with one 'brightening' item overnight - and it's not vinegar

White socks are prone to getting dirty as they are in direct contact with your feet which leaves them vulnerable to bacteria and dirt.

There's nothing worse than stained, smelly white socks. They can ruin an outfit and can be difficult to clean.

However, rather than throwing out stained socks, fans of cleaning pro Mrs Hinch have shared their go-to method for removing the unsightly marks - and it's not white vinegar.

Helen Umpleby posted on the Facebook group, 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips': "Is [there] any way to get these white again?"

The post included a photo of dirty socks and white garments soaking in a kitchen sink. The socks appeared to be stained with black and brown mud stains.

The post was inundated with comments but the most suggested solution was to use Napisan.

Napisan stain remover claims to "kill germs", "brighten whites" and work at 30ºC.

Lavinia Blackman said: "Wash it out as best you can then soak it in Napisan or Ace then put it on a boil wash."

Maria Markou agreed and commented: "Napisan I find is the best."

Louise Boyle suggested: "Napisan soak in cold water overnight, wash then hang outside in the sunlight."

Suzie Ritchie wrote: "I’ve just discovered Napisan, it is amazing stuff!"

Zara Hossain posted: "Soak in hot water with a very generous amount of Napisan powder. I didn’t believe it either but it restored a lot of items I was ready to colour/get rid of!

"I soak all of mine for at least 12 hours. You may need to redo it. Just make sure you wash it out in the washing machine with NO detergent."

Napisan can be bought online and from supermarkets. It costs £5 from Sainsbury's, £4.50 from Asda and Tesco, and £5.50 from Ocado.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets and denture tablets.

Michelle Mckinney Kloek commented: "Vanish and Fairy washing up liquid. I take someone plays cricket in your household."

Tracie Merritt replied: "Soak in dishwasher tablets. Pop it all in the washing machine with the water it was soaked in with normal detergent. Works a treat."

Clare Jones wrote: "Denture tablets do the trick for me for my whites. Leave to soak in hot water in the bath for a few hours."
