Handy tips for cleaning mould in the house

Despite our best efforts it can sometimes seem impossible to keep our bathrooms completely mould free. The humid and damp conditions of bathrooms make them the perfect spot for this unwanted fungus to grow.

Regular cleaning and keeping the windows open for ventilation are all ways to help keep mould at bay.

However, one expert revealed another method for banishing mould in the bathroom, that requires little effort.

According to James Chapman, owner of Bella Bathrooms, introducing houseplants into the bathroom not only looks good, but it can also contribute to reduced moisture levels and improved air quality.

He shared five houseplants to add to your bathroom for this reason.

Spider plants

Spider plants are incredibly adaptable and thrive in warm, humid environments.

They purify the air and regulate humidity levels, creating an environment less conducive to mould growth.

"Spider plants are fantastic for bathrooms," James said.

"They help maintain optimal humidity levels, making them perfect for preventing mould."

To care for spider plants, place them in indirect sunlight and water them moderately.

Air plants

Air plants don’t require soil and thrive in temperatures between 10 to 32 degrees celsius and humidity levels of 40 to 60 percent.

They help maintain optimal humidity levels, reducing the chances of mould growth.

James said: "Air plants are excellent for bathrooms. Their ability to thrive in humid conditions makes them ideal for preventing mould."

Mist them with water several times a week and ensure good air circulation to keep them healthy.

Ferns

Ferns efficiently absorb moisture from the air, helping to reduce dampness and mould growth. They are perfect for bathrooms with high humidity.

"Ferns are great at absorbing surplus moisture, which is essential for preventing mould in a bathroom," James explained.

Keep them in indirect light and ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged for best results.

Peace lilies

Peace lilies thrive in low light and adapt well to humidity changes.

They are excellent at purifying air and absorbing mould spores.

James said: "Peace lilies are an excellent choice for bathrooms.

"They help to keep the air clean and reduce mould spores."

To care for peace lilies, water them regularly but avoid overwatering, and place them in a shaded spot.

Aloe vera

Known for its beauty benefits, aloe vera is also great at mitigating mould growth. It thrives in high humidity and has exceptional air-purifying abilities.

James said: "Aloe Vera is not only good for your skin but also helps in preventing mould in humid bathrooms."

Keep aloe vera in bright, indirect sunlight and water it deeply but infrequently to ensure it stays healthy.
