There's nothing quite like enveloping yourself in a soft, fluffy white towel, but all too soon brand new towels can feel as though they've lost their softness and turned hard. While there are countless washing tips and tricks out there claiming to restore towels to their former glory, according to experts from Dr Beckman, there could be an even easier way to ensure your towels stay as fluffy as possible.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Dr. Beckmann spokesperson, Natasha Brook revealed there is a common laundry mistake that could be doing some major damage to your fluffiest towels.

She explained: “Soft and fluffy towels are a great way to indulge in an at-home spa experience, however, consistent washing at high temperatures can damage the fabric, causing shrinkage and making them uncomfortable to use."

Too much heat can damage your towels. Washing your towels on a cool wash before use can also be a great way to break them in and be more absorbent. Simply pop them in a cool wash and hang them out to dry.

Overusing detergent can also lead to dry, crispy-feeling towels. When you use too much detergent, it often doesn't come out and can build up on your towels, leaving a residue on your towels that can make them stiff and scratchy.

Instead, Natasha recommends reaching for a good detergent that can be used in small amounts and in a cooler wash. To top it off, it could even save you money along the way.

Natasha explained: "Washing your towels with a suitable detergent such as Dr. Beckmann’s Magic Leaves Laundry Detergent Sheets, which work effectively even at temperatures as low as 20C can help prolong the lifespan of your products while saving energy and keeping bill costs low."

In the same way that high temperatures can cause some damage to fluffy towels when washing, the same goes for when drying your towels.

Though the heating is likely off for the summer months, when winter rolls around it's worth avoiding placing towels on a hot radiator to dry.

Instead, tumble dry your towels on a medium setting for soft and bouncy results.

Experts from The English Home suggest drying them for 20 minutes at a time and then checking them.

"When it comes to drying towels, I always shake mine before and after washing,” admits Emma Stanley-Brown, Towel Buyer at John Lewis & Partners, told The English Home. “This opens up the fibres slightly to allow the detergent to sink in, and helps to promote drying."
