When it comes to cleaning sometimes we often forget to do certain things.

Whether it is cleaning the inside of your washing machine, scrubbing the bath or sprucing up your mattress. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day to do it all. However, one expert has come to the rescue with maintaining your mattress.

If looked after well, your mattress can last for years. Especially when it comes to keeping it clean and turning and flipping it over a few times a year.

Not only can our mattress collect sweat, shed dead skin and be a cosy hangout for dust mites, it is no wonder it can sometimes affect our sleep.

However, Luxury British bedmaker Harrison Spinks has shared advice on how to maintain and clean your mattress for a fresh and healthy night’s sleep that lasts.

Rebecca Mayes, a sleep expert at Harrison Spinks said: “Your mattress goes through a lot in its lifetime so it’s important to take care of it and prolong its life as much as possible. Generally, it’s recommended that we clean our mattress once every six months."

Even better it doesn't need to be complicated or costly to do so. All you need is a few simple household items.

Laundry powder

Many of us have this in our kitchen cupboards so it is no wonder it will leave our mattress smelling fresh.

Mayes said: “For a deep spring clean use gentle, bleach-free, unscented laundry powder, or washing up liquid mixed with a small amount of water.

"Simply blot this onto any marks, and then apply a thin layer of bicarbonate of soda across the entire mattress to neutralise odours. Leave this for a few hours then clean it off with a clothes brush."

A soft brush

We will probably have one lying around thanks to using it to get rid of dust but a soft brush won't mess with the mattress fabric.

“You must never use a vacuum cleaner on beds that contain natural fillings, like all our sustainable mattresses, as this can displace the filings and pull the fibres through the fabric," Mayes recommended.

“Be sure not to soak your mattress, and instead tackle stains with a gentle circular motion. Once finished, allow the mattress to dry and then flip it over and repeat the process, before leaving it to dry out completely on both sides."

How often should I flip the mattress?

While we sometimes forget to do this, it is important to do so otherwise it can cause damage in the long run.

“Depending on the type of mattress you have, rotating or flipping it every couple of months can also help prevent damage and extend its lifespan. Turn-free or pillowtop mattresses should be rotated, keeping the soft sleep surface at the top."

How often should I wash my bedding?

There's nothing better than having fresh sheets, getting into bed after a long day's work and feeling fresh for a good night's sleep.

Mayes said: “Adding a mattress protector, ideally made from natural materials, which can be cleaned more often with a lot less effort, will also help to keep your bed in the best condition.

“Finally, make sure you’re cleaning your sheets every week, and your pillows and duvets every few months, to keep your whole bed feeling fresh.”
