Remove stains from vinyl flooring using four-ingredient solution for a 'deeper clean'

When it comes to keeping the home spotlessly clean it is easier said than done. We can't help but want to leave the housework and any mundane chores until the point that it needs to be done. While certain products work well for different materials sometimes we are at a loss on how to get a stain out.

In particular, we are talking about vinyl flooring. If you have made a spillage then you'll know the dread of how difficult it can be to remove on your flooring.

But fear not, as experts have come to the rescue and shared the most effective way to remove the stain.

Liam Cleverdon, flooring expert at Flooring King, has revealed the best ways to remove stains from vinyl.

He said: “Vinyl flooring is easy to maintain and is resistant to damage and moisture, so any accidental stains and messes shouldn’t be a major concern."

Cleverdon has shared his step-by-step guide on saying goodbye to the stains. The expert started: “To ensure a thorough clean and prevent long-term stains, address the affected area immediately.

"Do this by wiping the surface with plain water to help remove any stickiness or chunks of mess. Follow up with a brisk brush or vacuum to remove dirt, dust, or hair for a clear canvas to tackle."

The flooring expert suggested cleaning the floor using a "damp mop" and a mixture of warm and vinyl cleaner which will act as your cleaning solution.

Meanwhile, for an at-home alternative, you can mix hot water and apple cider vinegar to help remove dirt build-up without leaving a soapy residue on the vinyl.

"For a deeper clean, mop the floor with a dishwashing soap mixture before mopping with the vinegar and water mixture," he added.

By this stage your vinyl flooring should be clean and dirt-free, however, sometimes certain stains persist. Don't worry though there is a way around this.

Cleverdon recommends: "Using baking soda for stains from wine, fruit juice, tomato juice, or other acidic substances."

All you have to do is mix baking soda with a water paste and use a clean towel to lift the stain. Then you can use water and vinegar to remove any baking soda residue.

“For tough stains such as ink, paints, or lipstick marks, use rubbing alcohol and a soft-bristle brush," he advises.

"This degreasing agent effectively targets stubborn stains, eliminating even the toughest ones. Avoid using an abrasive brush as this can scratch and damage the floor. Once you’re confident the stain has lifted, mop over the surface to remove solution residue," Cleverdon added.

Meanwhile, if you have scruff marks on your vinyl flooring then you can use WD-40 with a mild liquid detergent and warm water mixture.

The pro said: "Spray the WD-40 onto the affected area, letting it sit for a couple of minutes before gently rubbing the stain with a soft cloth until it lifts. Then, remove any product residue using a soapy mix of liquid detergent and warm water."

However, if you plan on using white vinegar as your solution then you will want to create an equal part mixture of water and white vinegar. Just make sure to put it in a spray bottle.

Finally, Cleverdon said: "Spritz the affected area and let the cleaning solution sit for a few minutes. Once the solution has had enough time to penetrate the stain, use a clean, microfibre cloth to wipe the area before rinsing with warm water and drying with a cloth.”
