Cardiff is the coffee capital of the UK, research has found.

A poll of 2,000 adults discovered natives of the South Wales city consume more coffee than anywhere else.

Those in the Welsh capital will drink more than three cups a day, sinking more than 20 per week.

Instant coffee was enjoyed most in Cymru (Wales), with Liverpool the biggest lovers of a cappuccino – the most favoured drink by all respondents. Londoners however were found to prefer a Latte.

A spokesperson for Alpro Barista, which will be giving out free coffees in Manchester and London between 28th-29th September and 5th-6th October respectively, said: “It's fascinating to see the variety of coffee preferences across different cities.

“And it was particularly interesting to see the cappuccino come out on top as the favourite – beating the classics like a flat white and a latte.”

Those in Southampton were found to be the early risers with most brewing themselves a coffee as early as 8:06am on average. While Londoners were the most likely to opt for a cow’s milk alternative for their beverage - oat being most popular.

Over two thirds struggle to imagine going a whole day without having a coffee, as three quarters regard it as a key part of their daily routine, and 38% claim their first cup sets them up for the day.

When preparing their drink at home it emerged it took an average four minutes and 22 seconds to do so.

According to the OnePoll.com data, 49% make theirs quickly and go – but one in five have routines and rituals they follow when brewing up a cup, plans depending.

Following on, three in 10 (31%) prefer to make the drink at home while 34% like to purchase one from a café. As six in 10 believe the coffee making process has an impact on their overall enjoyment of their drink.

Of all respondents, 78% were open to trying new types of coffee – but a quarter have never experimented with the way they have theirs.

A spokesperson from Alpro, which will be giving out recipe flavours at the roadshow, including Oat Banoffee and Strawberry Matcha, added: “We’re certainly a nation of coffee drinkers, but the research has shown some can be a little hesitant to try new things.

“But this doesn’t need to be the case – as many may be missing out on an even better coffee by dabbling with different styles and alternatives-to-dairy that bring new flavours and textures.

“There is an ever-increasing popularity in oat drink which can bring new flavour to the old classics if people don’t want to switch to an entirely different type of coffee.

“Whatever your coffee preferences may be, we’re encouraging the nation to be your own barista at home and experience new coffee types and ingredients.”
