Strawberries are a delightful summer treat, but their short shelf life often leaves many disappointed - and unwanted food waste. Fortunately, a simple yet effective hack has surfaced that can keep strawberries fresh for weeks, ensuring you enjoy your berries longer without the hassle of spoilage.

Sharing the hack on YouTube, creator The Cross Legacy claims the method can help the fruits stay fresh for three weeks. The method begins by placing the strawberries in a large bowl that holds about 10 cups of water.

To this, add a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar with five percent acidity. The strawberries should be soaked for precisely two minutes.

It’s essential to set a timer, as exceeding this duration can affect the berries' taste and texture. During the soak, the vinegar solution works to kill off mould spores and bacteria that contribute to the strawberries' quick deterioration.

After the two-minute soak, transfer the strawberries to a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cold running water to remove any remaining vinegar solution.

Next, lay the strawberries out on a towel and allow them to dry completely.  They need to be bone dry before the next step, as any residual moisture can accelerate spoilage.

Once dried, gently place the strawberries in a glass jar lined with a paper towel. The paper towel helps absorb any excess moisture that might remain, while the glass jar provides a more controlled environment than plastic containers, which can trap moisture and hasten spoilage.

Store the jarred strawberries in the fridge. By following this method, you can extend the freshness of your strawberries for several weeks, allowing you to savour the delicious berries well beyond their usual shelf life.
