Jaguar XJ 2019 to be reborn as an all-electric saloon car
Jaguar will reinvent the XJ as an electric car for its next generation.
The all-electric XJ is set to go on sale in 2019, with a launch slated for the end of 2018 - marking the 50th anniversary of the first XJ.
This would follow the launch the all-new Jaguar I-Pace which is scheduled to debut later this year.
I-Pace is lining up to be a rival to the Tesla Model X and its claimed specs seems to make it a viable rival.
It will be powered by a 90kWh battery pack which is said to have a range of over 300 miles.
This powertrain and two electric motors has a claimed power output of 395bhp and 700Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 62mph in four seconds.
Charging with a 50kWh DC rapid charger allows it to recharge 80 per cent in 90 minutes.
Jaguar I Pace 2018 will launch later this year
The XJ will likely borrow some of the features from the I-Pace, or at least be informed by it, in terms of its electric powertrain.
Autocar revealed that the luxury saloon will be reinvented as an all-electric flagship car for the brand, despite the proliferation of SUVs.
It is not just looking to challenge premium electric cars but also be a credible rival to combustion-engine vehicles such as the Mercedes S-Class.
The car will retain its saloon design but may have some updated design features typical of electric cars such as a false grille.
Previously, Jaguar has revealed that it will add electric powertrains to all new cars from 2020, whether that’s petrol-hybrid or battery-electric.
Details about the car’s specs and price are thin on the ground but the addition of the electric powertrain will likely see the price increase.
