Martin Lewis has revealed all motorists with a Tesco Clubcard can secure RAC breakdown cover at a massive discount in a major money-saving tip.

According to the finance expert, road users can use their Tesco Clubcard vouchers to pay for RAC policies.

Those who regularly shop at Tesco could use a portion of their vouchers on breakdown cover and then pay off the rest of the agreement at a discounted rate.

However, it may be possible for car owners to save a lot of vouchers and then trade them in to receive the entire policy completely free.

The savings mastermind handed out the simple tip while speaking on the latest episode of the BBC’s Martin Lewis Podcast.

He said: “The cheapest way to get new AA or RAC cover through the big boys and girls is via Quidco and Topcashback which are the cashback sites and actually give you quite a decent whack but it’s still gonna be about £80 a year just for basic cover. You’re gonna pay more otherwise.

“You can get RAC if you have Tesco Clubcard vouchers and if you’ve got those stored up you can use those to pay for RAC that brings the price down.”

Each Tesco Clubcard point is equivalent to £1 spent with vouchers issued to customers four times per year.

However, a partnership between the store and RAC means every Tesco Voucher is worth 2x its value to spend on cover.

The RAC offers motorists three different types of breakdown cover depending on the level of protection they require.

A basic service costs just £5.49 per month, around £65 per year, and includes roadside assistance up to 10 miles from an address, five callouts a year and a free car check.

The extra package at £8.99 also includes national recovery to allow motorists to have complete peace of mind.

Meanwhile, the more costly complete package at £10.53 throws in a free annual MOT and unlimited callouts.

However, Martin has stressed that securing breakdown cover at one of the two biggest firms was not always necessary.

He added: “But I would tend to go looking elsewhere - Auto Aid and Eversure. They both give full service cover for you and a partner for £57.28 a year.”
