'I'm a car expert - never touch this secret button in your car for very important reason'

Drivers have been told to reconsider pressing a common car switch located on almost every dashboard in the UK with drivers possibly putting their health at serious risk.

Motoring experts have urged drivers to think twice about pressing a common button found on petrol, diesel and electric car dashboards due to possible health concerns.

Selecting the inner circulation button when first stepping foot into a car may appear harmless but could increase the risk of mild illness and even cancer

The inner circulation button only pushes gases already inside the cabin and not from the air outside the vehicle.

This could be vital in helping protect those with hayfever sufferers and motorists with allergies but experts have advised against the move.

Instead, experts at car servicing firm Dick Lovett have urged individuals to always bring “fresh air” into the vehicle if it has sat in the sun for a long period.

Dick Lovett explained: “As often reported, the materials inside our cars can become slightly toxic in hot weather conditions.

“This is because our car interiors are made with chemicals, and sometimes these chemical compounds will be released when our interiors get used (i.e. sitting on the seats or pressing any dashboard buttons).

“When cars are left sitting in the sun, the rate at which these materials release toxins exacerbates, pushing chemicals, such as formaldehyde – a preservative – into the air.

“If this air isn’t expelled, some drivers could experience mild nausea or headaches as a result, so it’s crucial to get some fresh air into the car before setting off.”

Formaldehyde is used in heavy industry and is a chemical used in the embalming process.

However, it is also known to be toxic to humans and long-term exposure to the material is understood to cause cancer.

The human carcinogen can lead to myeloid leukaemia and also cause cancers of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

It’s not the first time road users have been warned about the potential safety risks associated with formaldehyde.

Car YouTuber Chequanlaosi stressed the gas should be pumped out of a vehicle for at least “10 minutes” before the internal circulation switch can be activated.

“In the summer, the car will emit formaldehyde after being exposed to the sun.

"After we get in the car and turn on the air conditioner, we must turn on the outer circulation for 10 minutes, and then turn on the inner circulation after the formaldehyde is exhausted."
