Drivers face £911 pay-per-mile charges for this mileage as car expert hits out
With many predicting that a pay-per-mile tax system will be introduced in the October Budget, a motoring expert has feared it will stop many from buying an EV.
A popular motoring personality has taken to YouTube to share his thoughts over the potential road tax reforms that could leave many drivers out of pocket.
Shahzad Sheikh is better known to fans as Brown Car Guy, regularly posting videos to his YouTube channel which he shares his thoughts on the latest motoring subjects and showcases cool features in new and classic models.
In a recent video, Shahzad warns that the Government may introduce a new pay-per-mile road tax in the upcoming October Budget, which all vehicle owners will need to say. The YouTuber highlighted that the controversial move could lead to fewer drivers buying an electric car.
He explained: "Let me just say, with the whole thing about the ZEV Mandate and encouraging people to move to EVs, when you start saying these sort of things when people are already being a bit reluctant to move into EVs, even when it would actually make sense for them, this isn't going to help.
"This is not going to help people want to get an EV because they'll think 'I'll just stick with petrol because I'm going to have to pay anyway'. They're really shooting themselves in the foot here."
Under the current system of vehicle excise duty (VED), better known as road tax, drivers typically pay a figure based on the amount of carbon dioxide their vehicle produces for the first year and then a flat rate of £190 for following years.
However, with electric car owners set to pay road tax for the first time in April 2025, a growing number of motoring experts are predicting a pay-per-mile system will be rolled out, which will see drivers charged a unique figure based on how far they travel.
Since the Government has yet to confirm if the move will be rolled out to UK drivers, it is unknown how much drivers will be charged. However, Shahzad highlighted the figure could be as high as £900 per year for some.

Later in the video, Shahzad shared his thoughts that the potential of a pay-per-mile road tax system shows that the Labour Government are not friendly to motorists.
He added: "We've always said that this Government and the Labour Party is not necessarily car friendly and we're already seeing very clear signs of that. There are already indications, there's that speech that Keir Starmer gave, saying that things are going to get worse before they get better.
"Well, if you're thinking about that with a bit of dread, it's actually going to get considerably worse if you happen to own or drive a car. I think that they are being strongly urged to bring in pay-per-mile as soon as possible."
