Fuel duty rises expected to be introduced in the Autumn Budget could be disastrous for petrol and diesel owners across the UK, according to an expert.

Andrew Jervis, CEO of online car repair marketplace ClickMechanic, warned the move would have an impact on the millions of road users who still rely on combustion vehicles.

It comes after experts predicted that a rise in fuel duty is likely to be introduced by the Labour Government in October.

A 5p fuel duty rise to reverse a previous cut due to the cost of living crisis is likely to come to fruition despite Labour backing previous freezes.

This would see over £130 per year slapped onto the typical fuel bill for those with a 50-litre family car.

Andrew has warned petrol and diesel owners will be right in the firing line as motorists battle rising fees to stay on the roads.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Andrew said: "If fuel duty is increased, it's important to consider the impact this will have on those who still rely on petrol and diesel vehicles.

"While such an increase could encourage the transition to electric vehicles with the 2035 deadline in sight, this shift must be supported by sufficient infrastructure and affordability.

"We hope that any decision on fuel duty takes into account the current economic climate and provides adequate time to allow drivers to adapt."

Fuel duty rates are paid every time motorists put petrol and diesel inside their vehicles and are currently set at 52.95p per litre.

The Conservatives haven’t raised fuel duty fees for 13 years with the last increase coming back in 2011.

The move is likely to be unpopular among motorists, with previous studies showing drivers were generally against the move.

Motoring experts at Go Compare stated that just 26 percent believe the car tax system should be updated.

But specialists such as FairFuelUK have not ruled out the introduction of a higher 10p rise which could increase yearly bills by more than £260.

Jayne Harrold, tax partner at Evelyn Partners, also suggested Chancellor Rachel Reeves may cancel the 5p cut by claiming the cost of living crisis is now finished.

Jayne predicts Labour could then add another 5p to fuel duty meaning motorists will be hit with a 10p rise all in one go.
