Drivers are just learning about this stylish used sportscar for £2,000

Used car buyers looking for an affordable yet entertaining model have been advised to consider a lesser-known Peugeot that offers good value for money.

A popular motoring personality has recommended a surprisingly affordable used car that offers stylish looks, good performance, and low running costs.

Jonny Brighton runs the Cars With JB YouTube channel, fronting videos in which he looks at a wide range of second-hand models to help viewers find the perfect car for them.

In a recent video, Jonny looks at a range of impressive cars that can be bought on a £5,000 budget, recommending in particular a long-forgotten Peugeot.

He explained: "We have the incredibly rogue Peugeot RCZ, a car that started life as a concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007 and received so much love and attention that Peugeot felt compelled to turn it into a real production car.

"I wouldn't say the interiors are particularly pretty but outside they are quite striking with that double bubble roof being reminiscent of race cars."

Whilst Peugeot are best known for making small yet entertaining hatchbacks, such as the classic 205 GTI, the RCZ was the company's attempt to enter the sports car market, competing against the Audi TT and Volkswagen Scirocco.

Built in Austria between 2009 and 2015, the Peugeot RCZ gained a lot of praise for its attractive looks and impressive driving style, even if some claimed the suspension is quite firm.

Despite not being as popular as some rivals, there are plenty of Peugeot RCZs to choose from on the used car market, with prices starting at around £2,000.

Whilst the later RCZ R models are the fastest in the range, and a 2.0-litre diesel offered the best fuel economy, Jonny recommended drivers opt for the basic 1.6 petrol engine, which is a good all-rounder.

He advised: "In base spec, these came with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 156bhp, taking it to 60mph in eight seconds and they are front-wheel drive as well, so they're kind of like a cheap but fast hot hatchback that looks like a sports car.

"It looks like a rear-wheel drive car, but reviews do give them props for good hot hatchback-style handling which makes sense given Peugeot's history."

Whilst the Peugeot RCZ is generally a reliable model, the vehicle parts retailer BreakerYard.com recommended that drivers check a number of components for wear and tear.

This includes opening and closing the electric windows when viewing the car, with some owners stating that the motors that control them break.

Potential buyers should also listen out for any rattles during a test drive, particularly ones coming from the air vents, which could be a sign that they are not mounted correctly.
