'I'm a mechanic - doing this every 5,000 miles will keep an engine running for decades'

One of YouTube's most popular motoring personalities has recommended drivers stick to the manufacturer's recommended service intervals to prevent problems.

The popular mechanic Scotty Kilmer has shared a number of tips that can help drivers extend the life of their current car and help to avoid high deprecation rates.

Scotty has been a mechanic for more than 55 years and regularly posts videos to his YouTube channel in which he shares tips to help motorists reduce the cost of driving and avoid breakdowns.

In one of his latest videos, Scotty showcases an old Toyota off-roader that has covered nearly 400,000 miles, stating that routine maintenance has helped to preserve the engine.

He explained: "Today, I'm going to show you how to make your engine last a really long time. Yes, this engine has 389,000 miles, it still runs like a clock.

"The oil and filter has been changed every 5,000 miles - the oil is cheap, but the engine is very expensive. The coolant has been changed once every five years, and it's got that Toyota pink coolant. You don't want corroded coolant to eat up your engine."

With the cost of car insurance and road tax on the rise, many motorists are looking for ways in which they can make driving less expensive. However, Scotty recommended that drivers do not cut back on maintaining their car.

In the video, the mechanic stated that replacing the oil is far cheaper than rebuilding or replacing the engine, with four litres of name brand motor oil typically costing around £30.

To make sure that their vehicle's engine has enough fluid, drivers should check the levels of the engine oil, coolant and screenwash at least once per month, changing them at regular intervals.

Later in the video, Scotty also suggested that making sure the vehicle is not being driven hard can have a positive impact on how long the engine lasts.

He advised: "If you want your engine to last, don't redline in into the red - they'll wear [engine components] out much faster. And, if you have a rubber timing belt like this, change it every 100,000 miles so no damage is done to the engine.

"[These are ] simple things to do to keep your complex engine running hundreds of thousands of miles."

Whilst it will depend on the type of engine and driving conditions, it is generally advised that motorists do not exceed 3,000 RPM when behind the wheel.

By over-revving an engine for an extended period of time, drivers are putting more strain on components such as the valve-train, flywheel, and clutch.

Naturally, driving at higher revs can also lead to significantly worse fuel consumption, highlighting the importance of changing to the highest gear possible and easing off the accelerator.
