The much-loved 1985 classic turns 40 next year with a sequel to Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg’s much-loved treasure-hunting adventure having been talked about for decades.

And now in an age of legacy sequels, it looks like The Goonies 2 is finally about to happen.

After all, Warner Bros has just had an impressive box office opening weekend for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which arrived in cinemas almost 40 years after Tim Burton’s original.

So it makes a lot of sense for the studio to be green-lighting a Goonies sequel for release in either 2026 or 2027, according to a new report

A source told The Sun: “It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless. The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited. It is early days but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalise on this. The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited.”

The original cast included the likes of Sean Astin, Key Huy Quan and Corey Feldman, while the villain star Robert Davi previously gave Express.co.uk an exclusive update on the sequel.

Disney+ now costs as little as £4.99 a month for the Standard with Ads plan, but members can get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront on the Standard or Premium plans.

Disney+ is the only place to stream epic shows including The Bear and Shōgun, plus blockbuster franchises like Star Wars and Marvel.

Davi, who played Jake Fratelli, is certainly up for The Goonies 2 telling us: “Oh yeah, if everybody else was on board and it was a good script. I’m sad that Dick Donner is not there because he was a huge force in that.”

The original’s director died aged 91 in 2021, but given it was Spielberg’s story and he secretly shot a couple of scenes, perhaps he could direct the next one?
