Star Wars Rogue One: Who is Mon Mothma and why is she so important?

Mon Mothma is a major Star Wars character
The Star Wars character will be well known to fans as a Rebel leader from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi played by Caroline Blakiston.
She was due to appear in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, playing an important role in the formation of the Rebellion against Palpatine’s soon-to-be Empire.
However actress Genevieve O’Reilly’s portrayal of Mothma wound up being cut from the film entirely.
But the actress has been given another chance at the role in Rogue One, set after just before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope.
Her first appearance in Return of the Jedi is the last in her timeline
She’ll be returning with other franchise characters including Darth Vader.
Lucas film producer Kathleen Kennedy revealed Mothma would have a “significantly larger” role in the new film.
Kennedy: “We actually see quite a bit of her. The Rebel Alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it.
“And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do.”
Before the news, Mothma was best known for her iconic line in Return of the Jedi.
When she says: Many “Bothans died to bring us this information.”
The quote refers to the species credited with stealing the plans for the second Death Star.
O'Reilly's Mon was cut from Revenge of the Sith
The youngest incarnation of Mon appears in the animated Clone Wars TV series set before Episode III
The Bothans provided the Rebellion with the door code for the shield generator bunker on the forest moon of Endor.
A younger version of Mothma appears in The Clone Wars animated series representing the planet Chandrila in the Galactic Senate.
