A former BBC star has revealed how much he was paid to read the news bulletins, and it's a stark comparison to the salary of some stars at the broadcaster. Gareth Barlow, 34, was a familiar face on BBC News as he regularly hosted flagship bulletins.

But after a decade at the corporation, Barlow left his role at the Beeb to join Sky News Breakfast alongside broadcaster stalwart Kay Burley.

However, the journalist has now revealed exactly how much he was paid every year for the highly esteemed role at BBC News and admitted he picked up overtime to bring in more cash.

BBC executives paid the TV star £50,000 for his role as an SBJ senior broadcast journalist.

Speaking to The Sun, Barlow explained: "I won't comment on my current situation as Sky itself has a right to privacy with regards to its commercial contracts.

"However, the BBC is publicly funded so I'll share those details. When I left my staff position in 2021 I was an SBJ-senior broadcast journalist.

"I was paid just over £50,000 a year. I did do some overtime to earn some more."

Gareth's annual salary was a fraction of what some of his former colleagues earned.

BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty is reportedly paid between £345,000 and £349,999 while Gary Lineker was named the BBC's highest-paid star for the seventh year in a row, with the Match of the Day host earning £1.35million.

However, the salaries of many of the BBC's most famous faces are not disclosed on the list because the corporation does not have to reveal the salaries of people who are paid through production companies, including the BBC's commercial arm BBC Studios.

This means some presenters and personalities such as Tess Daly, Lord Sugar and Bradley Walsh are not published.

Here is the list of the highest-paid BBC stars in 2023-24:
