Strictly's Tess Daly's 'battle' with Vernon Kay as she 'would rather just do it on my own'

Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly and BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay both share the same passion, but the former model fears it will always lead to a 'battle' between them.

Tess Daly has opened up about a “battle” she and her husband Vernon Kay frequently have, with the Strictly star confessing she would rather “do it on my own” to avoid tension.

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter has been in a relationship with BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon for over two decades now, with the pair tying the knot in 2003. They share a dreamy six-bedroom home together in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

Their home, in particular their gym, is where Tess says an ongoing “battle” takes place between the couple. That is because she finds fellow fitness fanatic Vernon, who last year completed an ultra marathon for Children in Need, can be a distraction.

Speaking on the Power Hour podcast with Adrienne Herbert, Tess, 55, says that Vernon likes to share his wisdom when the pair use their gym together.

It means the presenter would rather go solo so she can “focus” on “what works best” for her.

Speaking in March last year, Tess explained: “If we went to the gym together, which is basically a shed at the bottom of our garden with a few mats on the floor and a few weights, I’d get in there, and he is very knowledgeable, bless him, and he tries, but he’s like, ‘yeah, do this, this is better for you and makes the muscle extension work better…’

“And I’m a bit like, ‘okay, I know what I’m doing, I’m just going to go over here with my little dumbbells, I’m going to do this, and I know what works for me, and I know’. So it gets a bit like the battle of who knows the most.

“So yeah, he means really well but I would rather just do it on my own. Then I can just focus.”

Tess says Vernon goes through phases of being really into fitness, but can also go for months without exercising properly. However, the DJ completed a gruelling 116 mile run over four days last year, raising £5 million for Children in Need.

After running from Leicester to Bolton, the 50-year-old described the experience as "one of the most painful and joyous experiences I've ever had". His running didn’t, however, end there, after he recently took part in his first parkrun in High Wycombe with Radio 2.

Tess meanwhile, who shares two daughters with Vernon, has previously opened up about how her workout routine makes her mentally prepared for the day. Speaking to Women's Health, she said: “You can’t beat that endorphin high – it just makes me feel able to tackle the day better.

“Mentally I find it really beneficial as well because when you’re working out, you’re completely in the moment, with no distractions, which in itself is a mindful exercise."

Tess, who will return to screens tonight on Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One, says yoga "really works" for her, and says it can be like a "mindful exercise in itself".

She added: "Like a lot of us, I’m a very busy person who doesn’t stop and switch off often enough, so yoga really works for me."
