Rylan Clark says he “bawled like a baby” while watching the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris.

The Radio Two host said he was watching pop legend Celine Dion perform at the Eiffel Tower when he started to get emotional. It was the first time the 56-year-old had performed since she announced she had Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022.

The rare neurological condition causes muscles to become rigid. The singer opened up about the condition, and how it could stop her ever performing again, in her documentary I Am Celine Dion.

However, on Friday night, Dion made her spectacular comeback, closing a four-plus hours-long opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. She performed Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” from the first stage of the iconic Parisian tower.

Afterwards, she said: “I’m honoured to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 opening ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favourite cities! Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.”

On his BBC Radio Two show, Rylan on Saturdays, the TV favourite revealed he was overcome with emotion watching the performance. He said: “It was so beautiful. Like I bawled like a baby.

“I’ve never seen anything so beautiful. On the Eiffel Tower, just, my goodness. She was told she would never sing again.”

Fellow Radio Two presenter Paddy O’Connell asked Rylan if he’d seen the documentary yet. To which he replied: “I can’t watch it alone. I’ve still not watched it.”

Fans on social media also confessed to being left teary-eyed watching Celine Dion’s first live performance in over four years.

One fan said: “Burst into tears at Celine Dion man,” while another added: “Celine Dion with one of the most beautiful performances you will ever see.”

While Piers Morgan added: “Given what she’s endured in recent years, and the pressure of such a huge global audience watching last night, this was the most astoundingly gutsy, inspiring, and brilliant performance I’ve ever seen by a singer. Congrats Celine Dion - magnifique!”
