The Voice UK coach Sir Tom Jones has shared the brutal nickname his father-in-law Bill Trenchard gave him at the start of his relationship with his now late wife Linda.

The pair began dating as youngsters and went on marry aged just 16, before welcoming their first child together, Mark, in 1957.

Tom, 84, says poor sex education is what led them to their accidental pregnancy and, at the time, they both feared what their families would say.

The singer said he particularly dreaded them telling Linda's father, who wasn't his biggest fan and referred to him as 'the bl***y whistling crow'.

After the teens decided to keep the baby, Tom recalled: "What I did know and very clearly was that s**t was now going to hit the fan.

"I feared the reactions of my mother and father. I feared, even more, the reaction of Linda's father.

"I knew that he didn't approve of me - 'the bl***y whistling crow' who lingered hopefully in the street outside his house.

"And now the bl***y whistling crow had got his prized eldest daughter pregnant."

Tom said Linda's father "stayed away" after learning of their pregnancy news and that their other family members had mixed reactions.

Despite this however, the young couple promised to stick together no matter what.

Tom Jones details why he enjoys working on The Voice

Writing in his autobiography Over The Top and Back, Tom shared: "We would find a way somehow.

"Because, for all the worry and fright and the sense of responsibility suddenly dawning large on my sixteen-year-old horizon, where there was no doubt in my mind was about my feelings for Linda, nor Linda's for me.

"We were completely in love. No question. I wanted to be with that girl and take care of her."

Before tying the knot, Tom also said he had "the most awkward conversation I had ever had" with Linda's father when he declared his love for her.

Recalling the conversation, he shared: "He seemed frail, withdrawn - the TB destroying him, though I wasn't to know it.

"I told him I loved his daughter. I told him I would love his daughter's child too, and that I would always do my best to look after them and make sure they were OK.

"He said he hoped it was true. If he seemed unconvinced at the time, you could have understood it."

Eight months into their pregnancy, the pair tied the knot at the Pontypridd Register Office.

Linda's father didn't attend the ceremony due to his illness, but their other loved ones were present to witness the day.

The couple defied the odds and stayed married right up until Linda's sad death in 2016 following a "short but fierce" battle with cancer aged 75.

The Voice UK continues tonight at 8:5pm on ITV and ITVX.
