Vernon Kay has claimed that teaming up with his BBC Radio 2 colleague Richie Anderson to present The One Show live would be "a director's nightmare" during a light-hearted chat between the pair today.

Before taking the helm of the BBC's evening show tonight alongside Lauren Laverne, the 50-year-old quizzed Richie about his involvement in the latest programme, only to learn he wasn't part of the night's roster.

Richie, 36, humorously suggested that the reason for this was because the pair "would be too good together". Vernon responded with a chuckle: "Oh, we'd overrun!".

"It's not fair on all the other channels," Richie added, laughing, reports the Manchester Evening News. Vernon then playfully envisioned their potential double act on the show as "a director's nightmare" and predicted that they would be "all over the place" in terms of adhering to the schedule.

Following Richie's jest that they might even overrun into the next programme's airtime, Vernon agreed: "We would, 'we're not going, we're staying here, move over'."

Since his stint on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020, Vernon has been at the forefront of various programmes, following reports that his career was on the rocks before his jungle adventure.

In February 2023, he stepped into Ken Bruce's shoes on BBC Radio 2 after the veteran broadcaster's 31-year reign came to an end.

Expressing his excitement about his new role, Vernon said it was "a dream come true" and "an honour" to follow in the footsteps of such a broadcasting icon.

Wrapping up his thoughts, Vernon stated: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be handed the microphone."

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) has since however reported a slump in listeners since he took over, but the presenter insists he's not sweating over the stats.

Speaking to The Sun's Fabulous Magazine about the listener figures, he said: "I don't worry about that. There's been a drop since Ken left, which is understandable, as the guy was there for 31 years.

"And then we've plateaued for the past three months."

Tess Daly's husband went on to say that he'll only start worrying if Helen Thomas, the head at BBC Radio 2, raises the alarm.

For now, he added: "I'll just do my job and I'm having the best time doing it."

Vernon Kay's show airs weekdays from 9:30am on BBC Radio 2.
