Actress Sally Lindsay is best known for starring in Coronation Street as Shelley Unwin from 2001 to 2006. Almost 20 years after her departure from the ITV soap, the 51-year-old actress gave her verdict on whether she would ever grace the Rovers Return with her presence again, as she addressed issues she faces in the showbiz industry.

She explained that age can be a factor which makes her and other actor's jobs more difficult, especially for women. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk at the 2024 Sedulo Colour Ball at The Hilton, Manchester, actress Sally said: "I think at the moment the industry is nearly impossible, for men and women, but especially for women.

"If you get over the age of 45 to 50, then I think it is much more difficult on a global scale. Not so much in England, because we like our stars, but I do think that if you're not on a certain list then it is extremely difficult."

The ITV soap star continued: "At the moment, the industry is so difficult. Budgets and commissioning are being slashed all of the time.

"It's a tough time for us at the moment. Don't get me wrong, we're not down the mines, but it is a tough time for the industry."

Speaking about ever making a return to Corrie, Sally said: "I have no need to return. I have my own company now and I have my own series. Logically, no, I would never return but never say never."

She added: "It was brilliant, I loved it. But it was such a long time ago. There's been 20 years of work after that. It was a very small, but lovely, part of my life."

Sally was iconic in her role as Shelley. Some of her more popular storylines included a bigamous marriage to Peter Barlow and an abusive and controlling relationship with Charlie Stubbs, who later left her while pregnant.

She left Weatherfield for the Lake District, to continue her barmaid career, taking up a job managing a country pub.

At the time of her exit, Sally said: "I think that Shelley has been through so much as a character during my time here, and I am really looking forward to working on different projects.

"I have and always will have a massive affection for Coronation Street, and I want to thank all the cast, production team and writers for everything that has happened for me and my character."
