Paris is beautiful, but the crowds make it hard to navigate. Luckily, there's two nearby cities that offer all the beauty with less of the crowds.

Paris is beautiful, but its popularity as a global tourist hotspot means that it can be a bit of a challenge.

Prices are high and queues are long. If you want to sneak a peek at the Mona Lisa at the Louvre then expect to muscle through throngs of tourists.

But there is another French destination that people are choosing over Paris due to its slower pace and equal beauty - Lyon.

Lyon is the third largest city in France, but is known as being more walkable than Paris.

The city has several walking tours that you can join in and learn about the rich history and culture of Lyon - from the Romans through to modernity.

Fourvière is the "perfect spot" for "a beautiful perspective over Lyon", claimed one Tripadvisor member.

As well as it’s walkability, it’s location nestled in between the Rhône and Saône rivers means it boasts stunning views from almost any part of the city.

However, if you want something like Paris but not in France, Belgium could be a place to add to your list. Tourists claim to be bypassing France in favour of smaller cities such as Brusssels, Bruges and Antwerp.

Frequent traveler Alicia Richards told ekathimerini.com: “I love France, but the crowds in the summer made our family choose Belgium instead. It has similar landscapes and amazing cities, just far less touristy.”

Just an hour by train from Paris is the bustling Brussels. Famed for its historical architecture and delicious cuisine, the capital of Belgium and the European Union is the perfect spot for a holiday.

It gets around 3.3 million visitors each year which is around 10 percent of the amount that travel to Paris, so offers a quieter alternative to the jam packed streets of the French capital.

One of the best places to visit in Brussels is the Grand Place, which can be found in the heart of the city.

First built in the 11th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site was burned down by the French in 1695 before being reconstructed to its original opulence in the coming years. It has a museum, the Town Hall and a host of other incredible historic buildings.

Bruges is another stunning destination which is incredibly walkable - but bring good shoes as the city's historic cobbled streets can be tough going.

Bruges, the capital of West Flanders in northwest Belgium, is famed for its canals, cobbled streets and medieval buildings. The city is often likened to looking like the set of a fairytale, with mediaeval influences and ornate houses lining its network of canals.

Both Lyon and Brussels are incredible alternatives to put on your list the next time you fancy a calmer holiday - and with both having direct flights out from the UK for under £200, why not?
