British travellers heading to Italy in September have been issued with a major warning, as the country faces a new wave of strikes.

Italy is a popular destination with British tourists, attracting some three million each year.

Like most European countries, it boasts an extensive and well-used public transport system.

However, serious disruption to transport is expected in September, after a number a new strikes were announced by rail and airline workers.

Below is a summary of the industrial action that has been announced by unions across Italy.

Airport Strikes: September 7

Cancellations and delays are to be expected on this date, following several planned walkouts by airport staff.

Pilots and cabin crew at Italy’s flagship carrier ITA Airways and budget airline Wizz Air say they will strike from 1pm until 5pm.

At the same time, air traffic controllers at Rome Fiumicino and Olbia Airport, and baggage handlers at Milan Malpensa, Florence Amerigo Vespucci and Pisa Galileo Galilei plan to walk out over the same four-hour period.

Italy nationwide rail strike: September 8

Major disruption to services is expected on Sunday, September 8 all across Italy.

Train drivers, conductors, and other on-board staff are set to stage a 24-hour walkout.

The strike is expected to impact both regional trains and long-distance services operated by state-owned Trenitalia and private company Italo.

Italy nationwide public transport strikes: September 9 and 24

To make matters even worse, public transport workers plan to hold two protests during September.

Bus, tram, and commuter train operators around the country plan to strike for eight hours on September 9.

A 24-hour strike is also scheduled for September 20, which is likely to cause major disruption.
