British tourists have been warned to check their passport as it's now just six weeks until the peak of the summer holidays.

Booked a summer holiday? It might be time to check your passport, according to a warning from the Post Office.

June 13 marks six weeks until the onset of the summer holidays and Britons are being urged to check their passport is in date.

While the Government advises that passport renewal can take three weeks, the Post Office recommends leaving at least six weeks to receive a new document.

Research by the team found that a third of UK passport holders are unaware of their document’s expiry date.

Britons will need to check the expiry date against the end date of their holiday as tourists will need to have at least three months left on their passport to travel to the EU.

EU passport rules

  • Passports must have been issued within the last 10 years
  • Passports must have at least three months left on the expiry from the end of the holiday

Turkey passport rules

  • Passports must be valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive
  • Have a full blank page for entry and exit stamps

USA passport rules

  • Passports must be valid for the full length of a tourist’s stay

Mexico passport rules

  • Passports must be valid for the full length of a tourist’s stay

How to apply for a new passport

  • Apply for a new passport at the Government website. It’s cheaper to renew online although people can also renew by post
  • An adult online application costs £88.50 while a child under 16 costs £57.50
  • An adult postal application costs £100 while a child under 16 costs £69
  • Applicants will usually get their passport within three weeks. If you need a passport sooner, you can use the Fast Track service.
