It's National Fish and Chip Day and if you're celebrating with a trip to the chippy, these are the best restaurants to enjoy the traditional British meal.

Fish and chips might be the UK’s best-known meal and the dish is celebrated every year on National Fish and Chip Day.

Although most people tend to enjoy fish and chips on a Friday, this year the celebration falls on a Thursday. But not all fish and chip meals are created equal.

If you’ve ever been disappointed by soggy batter or undercooked chips, you might want to check out Fry magazine’s best fish and chip restaurants. Or take a look at the order that one fish and chip employee would always avoid.

The expert team undertook months of mystery dining to find the UK’s best fish and chip restaurants and luckily there are spots all over the country.

  • Maltings Fish and Chips, Baldock, Hertfordshire
  • Pier Point Fish & Chips, Torquay, Devon
  • The Wee Chippy, Anstruther, Fife
  • Trenchers Spanish City, Whitley Bay, Newcastle upon Tyne

A Tripadvisor reviewer who visited Harbour Lights in Falmouth wrote: “Superb! Perfect fish and chips, great staff and very pleasant surroundings.”

Meanwhile, a visitor to The Magpie Cafe in Whitby said: “Visited for the first time and we were blown away! The food and service were spot on.”

People who visited the Maltings Fish and Chips in Hertfordshire praised the restaurant’s pensioners deal.

A separate rating by the team at Hertz found that Yorkshire has the highest number of top-rated fish and chips outlets with North Cornwall in second place.

South Devon, Kent and Dorset were also top-rated while Scarborough was named the best seaside town for fish and chips.
