Last week, the Olympic bronze medallist, 40, suggested that he's willing to have a mixed martial arts fight.
Mayweather dropped the bombshell in videos on his Instagram page, which saw him enter an MMA cage and look menacingly at the camera.
The clips, which were posted online not long after the announcement of Canelo vs GGG 2, quickly became the talk of the combat sports world, with many labelling them a publicity stunt.
De La Hoya agrees with that notion and believes Mayweather is pining for attention.
“I mean Floyd is a, you know him and his attention,” De La Hoya told TMZ when asked to give his thoughts on Mayweather’s social media antics.
“He can’t let anyone have attention so he does this.”
Like many in the combat sports world, De La Hoya believes the chances of Mayweather fighting in the UFC are slim to none.
He added: “He’ll never fight in the UFC.”

Oscar De La Hoya doesn't foresee Floyd Mayweather fighting in the UFC
“There's current interim lightweight champion [Tony Ferguson]. There's an undefeated Dagestani [Khabib Nurmagomedov]. There might be a big Russian event.
