Roger Federer took ‘risky’ decision ahead of Wimbledon - John McEnroe
ROGER FEDERER’s decision to skip the French Open was “risky”, says John McEnroe.
Federer, 36, sat out of the clay season for the second consecutive year to rest his body ahead of Wimbledon.
The Swiss star has always found the red dirt his weakest surface so he controversially opts out to ensure he is fresh for the grass season.
Federer is striving to win his ninth title at the All England Club when play gets underway next week.
And McEnroe thinks Federer will win his 21st Grand Slam title but claims he took a risk by not playing tennis for two months prior.
It’s a risky strategy but he’s proved he can do it
“He’s definitely the favourite,” McEnroe told What’s on TV.
“He’s positioned himself beautifully and missed the French Open like last year to make sure he’s ready.
“It’s a risky strategy but he’s proved he can do it.
“Roger’s is the greatest tennis story in the last 40 years – he has won three of the last six majors after not winning any for almost five years, it’s amazing.”
Federer will learn his Wimbledon fate when the draw is made on Friday at 10am.
However, he has not had the best preparation for the event after losing to Borna Coric in the Halle Open final last week.
But the week prior, Federer claimed his maiden Stuttgart Open title which should provide timely confidence boost.
