Lakers news: LeBron James will not like Magic Johnson’s comments - Brian Windhorst
LAKERS NEWS - LeBron James is keeping a “close eye” on what the Los Angeles Lakers are doing right now and will not be happy with Magic Johnson’s latest comments.
Johnson: I'll step down from Lakers if I don't improve them
That’s according to ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst, who claims Johnson’s suggestions that the Lakers could wait until 2019 to go big in free agency will not sit well with James.
The Lakers president admitted he will step down from his position if he is unable to convince top free agents to join the organisation in the next two summers.
But they are expected to make a big play next month in trying to recruit James along with Paul George.
Both players can opt out of the final year of their contract this Friday and head into the free agent market.
The likes of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler will all possibly be available in the 2019 market and it sounds as though the Lakers are prepared to wait until then.
He is keeping a close eye on the Los Angeles Lakers
But Windhorst insists James will not want to waste a year waiting around to challenge for the NBA title.
“As LeBron is in vacation right now, he is keeping a close eye on the Los Angeles Lakers,” Windhorst said on ESPN.
“Magic Johnson gave an interesting press conference today [yesterday] where he said that the Lakers are on a two-year plan.
“That if they don’t get a free agent this summer then they’re going to look at it as a two-summer bill.
“I hope when LeBron talks to the Lakers when he becomes a free agent that they have a better sell than that because LeBron James doesn’t want a two-year bill, he wants a one-year bill.
“He’s looking to remain competitive now and the Lakers are obviously going to have to present him with something better than hope and the promise that Magic would re-sign if he doesn’t get major free agents.
“LeBron is watching very closely. He has a plan. It’s not that exciting of a plan at the moment but the entire league is engaging trying to figure out what is happening.”
