LeBron James: Gregg Popovich plan revealed to steal Cavs star in free agency
LEBRON JAMES could be heading to the San Antonio Spurs in free agency with Gregg Popovich reportedly ready to “force” his way into a discussion.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were destroyed by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, losing 4-0 with Kevin Durant being named Finals MVP.
James exited Game 4 with four minutes left on the clock with the Quicken Loans Arena crowd rising to give him a standing ovation.
Many reports saw that as a final farewell to Cleveland as he is widely expected to opt out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent this summer.
The 33-year-old admitted after the NBA Finals that he doesn’t know yet what he will do.
But several teams are likely to make an attempt to persuade the three-time NBA champion to convince him to join them come July 1.
The Philadelphia 76ers, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers have all been heavily linked with a move for James.
But New York Times reporter Marc Stein claims the Spurs are also likely to enter the conversation.
He claims Popovich will try to “force” a conversation with James in an attempt to coax the four-time MVP into taking his talents to Texas.
The Spurs also have a challenging few weeks as they attempt to re-build the relationship with Kawhi Leonard.
Stephen Smith: LeBron James will talk with Golden State Warriors
Leonard played just nine regular season games last year after struggling with a persistent quad injury.
The injury also led to a break down in communication between Leonard and the Spurs.
And reports over the past few months have suggested the 26-year-old could look to force a trade this summer.
But a potential blockbuster move for James this summer would likely sway Leonard into staying in San Antonio.
