World Darts Championship: Michael van Gerwen makes huge claim after first round win
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has revealed he had to begin his World Darts Championship campaign in top gear otherwise he would have been “killed" by opponent Christian Kist.
Michael van Gerwen safely got through round one
Van Gerwen, who made the third-highest ever average of 109.9, was pushed hard by fellow Dutchman Christian Kist before prevailing 3-1 in the first round.
The Green Machine, who is defending the world title he won at Ally Pally in January, was in formidable form.
Checkouts of 141, 138 and 114 were some of the highlights.
And the world number one has admitted he can’t afford slow starts.
People always play well and if you under-estimate them, then you will get killed
When asked for his thoughts on his performance, Van Gerwen told Sky Sports: “Of course I like to start straight away in top gear.
“People always play well and if you under-estimate them, then you will get killed.
“You have to perform round after round, game after game, leg after leg.
“This is the most important tournament of the year and you want to play well.”
Christian Kist gave Michael van Gerwen a good fight
Van Gerwen has already amassed over £1.7million in prize money this year.
Elsewhere, Steve Beaton beat William O’Connor 3-1.
And James Wilson began his campaign winning by the same score against Krzysztof Ratajski.
