Marquez started the race on pole for the third time in four years and made a clean start ahead of Karel Abraham and Cal Crutchlow.
But, having opened up a gap of more than two seconds in just three laps, the Spanish three-time world champion lost control of his bike at Turn 2 and was sent careering into the gravel.

The incident was a near-carbon copy of a crash Marquez had in practice on Friday at the exact same corner.
Maverick Vinales, who won on his Yamaha debut in the season opening Qatar Grand Prix, took over the lead from the 24-year-old.

"I was feeling amazing on the bike and I was riding really good.
"I don't know why [I crashed].
"Sure, I made some mistake and these kind of mistakes make me quite disappointed.
"Now we have to think about the next one."
Marquez finished fourth in a chaotic first race of the season in Qatar as he opened his world title defence.
