Rory McIlroy's Scottish Open win proves he has Tiger Woods' ruthless trait
The Northern Irish golfer has an incredible record when it comes to converting leads, and has proved he can follow the footsteps of the greatest of all time.
PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf agree shock merger
Despite the win, McIlroy remains a staggering distance behind close friend and golfing icon Tiger Woods, though still some way ahead of the rest of the pack, in one particular statistic. 47-year-old Woods is tied alongside the late Sam Snead with 82 PGA Tour wins to him name, but that's not the only impressive stat that has caught the eye of golf fans.
Twitter user JustinRayGolf found an astonishing statistic that shows just how dominant Woods has been in golf since turning professional back in 1996. When it comes to converting 54-hole leads and co-leads, the Tour's average is a lowly 35.1 per cent over the last 15 years, with 52 players holding onto more than ten 54-hole leads or co-leads worldwide since 2006, according to Ray.
Rory, however, is streaks ahead with a whopping 55.6 per cent converted, meaning over half of his leads have seen the 34-year-old claim the win. But it's Tiger's record that blows this out of the water.
Woods boasts an incredible 93.2 per cent in converting 54-hole leads and co-leads on the PGA Tour. A number that will surely never be beaten.
Rory's record means that he should have held onto his lead at the Genesis Scottish Open and won by a clearer margain. But that wasn't to be the case.
McIlroy instead finished on 265 points following a birdie putt on 18 to win the tournament. The win saw Robert MacIntyre finish second just behind South Korea's Tom Kim and England's Tommy Fleetwood.
