President Florentino Perez has already stated it would cost £668m for Inter to sign Modric.
“The only possibility that Modric leaves is by paying €750million [£668m],” said the official.
But Modric seems determined to test Real’s resolve.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the player has called for talks with Perez to tell the president of his desire to leave the Bernabeu.
Cristiano Ronaldo has already quit Real Madrid for Italy, joining Juventus in a £105m deal.
Croatian Modric, who helped his country reach the World Cup final this summer, is seeking a £150,000-a-week contract at Inter.
His emergence as a target has already led to Inter postponing their push to sign Arturo Vidal, who now looks set to join Barcelona.
For a deal to work with Inter, Real would likely have to agree to a loan move with the assurance of a permanent transfer next summer.
In doing so, Inter can offset the deal over two financial years.
The club have hit financial difficult in recent times and are desperate to return to the top of Italian football.
They will play in the group stage of the Champions League this term.
