Liverpool transfer rumour circles online that Coutinho will leave because of Van Dijk
FANS believe Virgil van Dijk's £75million move will be funded by the sale of Philippe Coutinho.
Hislop: I'd take Salah and van Dijk over Coutinho
Liverpool have confirmed that Van Dijk will join from Southampton on January 1 for a world-record fee for a defender.
But there are now rumours among supporters that the deal will be funded by the sale of Coutinho to Barcelona.
The Brazilian midfielder wants to leave Anfield but Liverpool have refused to sell their star man.
Fans have taken to Twitter in their droves to discuss the theory that Van Dijk coming in means Coutinho is going.
Philippe Coutinho could leave Liverpool, fans believe
Philippe Coutinho is being lined up by Barcelona
One wrote: "Why are people talking like Coutinho is gonna stay, let’s get real, Van Dijk and Naby Keita costing £123M. That had to come from someone like Coutinho being sold ... "
A fellow fan agreed and said: "Just hit me that they spend 75 behind van dijk because they definitely gonna sell coutinho."
Another wrote: "I can't see FSG buying Van Dijk and Keita for those fees without factoring in the price they know is coming for Coutinho."
The concerns were met by another user who explained: "That’s why they bought a 75m player. The money they got is from the Coutinho deal."
One Liverpool fan drastically proposed calling for the board to go if Coutinho is then sold in January.
He wrote: "If Van Dijk and Keita are funded under the pretence that they’re getting money from Coutinho leaving then I am 100% FSG Out."
But another believes it will happen, posting: "You'd have to think they're expecting to sell Coutinho to Barca for big wedge, so Van Dijk will be covered."
Although the notion that Coutinho is definitely going was dismissed by one Liverpool fan.
He wrote: "Rival fans trying to make themselves feel better. all saying “it’s the Coutinho money”, as if we won’t go out and sign Lemar with that cash should we sell Phil in the summer. The Van Dijk money is the Van Dijk money. that’s the facts."
